World cup dreams, tartan army spirit
Well, it wasn’t quite the fairytale ending we were all hoping for.
Scotland’s World Cup campaign may be over but that shouldn’t take away from what a special few weeks it has been. For the first time in a generation, we had the chance to watch Scotland compete on football’s biggest stage and, wherever we were in the world, there was that familiar sense of excitement, hope and belief that you only really know if you’re a Scottish supporter.
As ever, the Tartan Army did Scotland proud. Win, lose or draw, our supporters brought colour, humour and friendship to the tournament, reminding everyone why they are regarded as some of the best fans in football. The results may not have gone our way, but the spirit and pride of following Scotland certainly never wavered.
That same spirit was alive and well here in Singapore, where more than 300 members and friends of the Singapore St Andrew’s Society came together at the Lion Brewery for our Scotland World Cup kick-off event for the Scotland v Haiti match. For one morning, we created our own little slice of the Tartan Army on the other side of the world – sharing a few pints over breakfast (thanks Muirs Deli for the square sausage and tattie scone rolls), singing along to Yes Sir, I can Boogie, and cheering on Scotland surrounded by fellow Scots and friends of Scotland.
In many ways, that’s what supporting Scotland is all about. Of course we want the wins, but it’s also about the friendships, the stories, the shared memories and the sense of belonging that comes from standing together and backing our team.
So while the World Cup dream is on hold for now, we can look back with pride at both the team’s efforts and the incredible support behind them. And who knows—maybe next time we’ll go a little further.
One thing’s for sure: let’s hope it won’t be another 28 years before we’re all gathering to cheer Scotland on at a World Cup again. Until then, Alba gu bràth!
